I'm active duty Army stationed in Hawaii. I am
originally from Danville and really enjoy being able to see current
pictures of Danville. I especially enjoy the seasonal pictures since
seasons really don't change here. Seeing "Christmas Day 2002" this
morning (Christmas morning) really made it feel like Christmas to me and
my wife. Thank you for having the pictures posted and for keeping them
current. I enjoy visiting this website 3 and 4 times a week. Keep up the
great work!

Hello! my name is Jodie Nolan and I saw a request
to know more about Grant school.
Some friends of mine bought it (friends of friends actually) I heard it
cost them about 1$-part of a beautification grant or something in
Danville. Their names are Sherman and Lisa (sorry can't remember the
last) although Lisa's maiden name was Howie. I have been there since
they fixed it up and it is BEAUTIFUL!!
they have a chapel on the main floor and have redone the gym into a
stage (Sherman is a musician) and the 3rd floor is where the main home
is. They are using the classroom there for the rooms, I've never seen a
bigger kids play room!! I don't know if they still are living there I
saw them last about a year ago and they were having trouble with their
roof. If you get the chance to go there, they are happy to show people
around and are very proud of their home
I hope this helps you !! Jodie Nolan

I was born and raised in Danville, Illinois and
this system of communication (this Website) is absolutely one of the best programs I
have ever witnessed. In 1927 I was fourteen years old and watched the
centennial parade on corner of Jackson and Main Street. Does anyone
remember what organization had the largest contingent of marcher's in
this parade? Bob Wright, and I discussed this event many times with Bob
when he was alive. Anyway, this communication system is excellent
advanced thinking and whoever came up with the plan is to be commended.
Having trouble finding obituaries location on the cover sheet, and most
likely is because of my advanced age. Frank

This is my question, as a young girl my mother and
I" would go shopping downtown Danville, I would see this blind man
sitting in front of the court house with a tin cup, for years I wonder
who that man was. This would of been in 1960, Any idea or information
on this gentleman? I always wonder if he had a warm bed to sleep in, and
food to eat, I worried for him sitting in the cold begging for money. As
a young girl this Tugged at my heart.( who was he)? anyone know? Still
thinking of the court house Man. Mrs. Kitty

Did Danville ever have a "friendly town"? It was
a small "town" in central park where the kids could drive little cars.
I understand they had to pass a test before they could participate.
Was there a movie made in the early 70's about Danville using the
children in the town? I would love to see this if it is still around
and maybe get a copy! Thanks!
(Susan this program was cut from the cities budget two years ago, but
hopefully will be reinstated...It was in Lincoln Park I think. I never
heard of the movie? Webmaster) |

Just learned of this sight tonight. Think it's
great and am sure I will visit it often. I have an inquiry to make.
Back in the mid 50`s a restaurant was located on the Dixie hyw north. It
was a nice place but not too large and I believe it would have been a
little south of the present day Wal-Mart. Of course back then it was
completely out of town. I would like to know the name of it. It was on
the right hand side when traveling north. Recently, when I was in
Danville I believe I probably located the building. It houses some small
business or is possibly empty. As I recall it being painted a dark brown
with some orange trim. Can some one help me with the name and proper
location? I was told once that a survey showed it was on a level with
the old First National Bank Building downtown. Thank You.
(Mary, Check out the Picture of
the Day today (Home page), is this it? Also there was an old brown
restaurant Italian or ribs? It was long abandoned when we came here in
'83 anyone remember ? Was it "Tony's"? Webmaster) |

It was great the Miss
Michigan won the Pageant in Hoopeston, however it was very low key, did
anyone realize that MISS AMERICA attended the Labor Day parade and the
activity's Sat, and Sun. The powers to be at the Miss America place did
not want her to go, however she insisted and attended the activity's
anyway. Hoopeston meant a lot to her.
My little niece got a picture with her. She was very excited.

Good
Question. We have a great lady (Rita Howell) that has photographed most
Churches in the area. Just give us the name of your church and location,
and if we have no photo, she will likely get one. If you have an
electronic photo already, just email it to me along with the Church
name, and your name, and we'll get it on the Portal one Sunday

Initial Inquiry:
Dear Sirs at Danville, IL,
I am doing a research on John
"Jack" Pettis, a jazz saxophonist that should have been born in Danville
between 1895 and 1905. If you could provide me information where to
apply for a birth certificate, or other, I'll appreciate very much your
help.
I look forward to hear from you soon.

This inquiry was referred to the
Illiana Genealogical and History society In IGHS in Danville Illinois.
Their reply to this site (and Mr. Borsetti) Follows.
Webmaster Sorry it has taken me
awhile to get back with you but I live in Indiana and don't get a chance
to go to the courthouse at Danville very often.
On my recent trip there I found a card in the birth index file with a
child being born on Oct. 27, 1895 to Wm. & Rachel Pettis (#3/119)but
there was no name given for the child at birth. In further
checking I did find out this child was a male and the 2nd born to
this couple. I also found two other children born to the
same parents, those being Elizabeth C. born June 15, 1900 &
Flora born April 14, 1906. I would assume this is most
likely the one he is looking for but cannot be sure. I am not sure
but I think I did check the 1900 census for VC and they were gone or a
city directory, I am not sure. If you would like me to
recheck the census I will do that next Friday when I work. You
could also have him e-mail me there and ask me to check it. If he
was born in 1895 he would be listed with his family.
From a follow up email: I did forget
to mention in my message to you that births were not required by
law to be recorded until 1916 in the state of IL and you might want to
mention that in your response to Enrico Borsetti
regarding John "Jack" Pettis.
Hope this information helps. You can
re-write it however you wish (and) put it on the Portals Message board.

What a great site? I am a former Danville resident
and seeing some of the sites brings back old memories. Reading the
Morley entry also brought back some old memories. I also grew up on Lake

Ice skating on Lake Vermillion, roller skating at the ILLINI, the Times

I just returned from a Danville visit and I am constantly amazed how
North Danville has grown. Especially my old neighborhood.

Hi, I was referred to this wed site, and was
wondering if anyone had a picture of the old Liberty Grade School, I
went to school there around 1954-1960, or close to that time frame.
Where the Mall is now on Vermillion Street, there was the old school, a
grocery store called the Liberty Market, and a small hamburger place
called "The Rich House" that was across from the A&W Root Beer Stand. I
use to work there when I was 14 and 15 years old, but now all these
buildings have disappeared and in my minds eye I can still see them, but
wish I had pictures of them so when I'm telling my children and grand
children about them I could also show them.
I'm also looking for pictures of the old Sutton's Root Beer stand that
was across from the school, where the Steak n Shake is now.
I grew up out in Lake Blvd, at the north end of town. Seems strange to
come home and find so much going on there. When young I took swimming
lessons at Mandy Temples pool at her home. I spent most of my baby
sitting money at "Ginny's Sweet Shop" a garage that was turned into a
small grocery store with a pool table, but the most fun in the area was
the "Spring n Swing" where the Lowe's store is now.
If anyone could help in my search of old photos of any of the above
mentioned places, or just want to talk about growing up in Danville,
and, or especially anyone who grew up in the Lake Blvd area in the 50's
and 60's, please e-mail me or send me a fax.
I love Danville. . .twenty one years of my life was spent there and it's
home to me always, no matter how many more years I live away in
Kaysville, Utah.

My old address was

I found out that my old bedroom

Hello once again Danvilleland-enjoy
the snow while you can/if you can. My thoughts on the river walk in
Danville is no way-all we need is another place for the police to patrol
cause this will certainly invite some good and bad "walkers" plus
Danville has way to many other more important issues to deal with, and
we certainly have plenty beautiful places to walk like Kickapoo,
Kennekuk, Forest Glen, Middle Fork scenic river and others-I could go on
and on but at this point I won't.
Isn't this a swell website-I've

Danville. I hope many others get into the system. I am
e-mailing a
friend in Norway and have passed on the allarounddanville web site
address to her so she can see what our area is like.

I am delighted to have discovered this site which
celebrates the rich
history, natural beauty, and the various attractions of Danville and
Vermilion County. Your site offers a nice summary of the many good
things that are in or have come from the area.
Keep up the good work!

Please correct your opening statement and relocate
Danville on the North Fork of the Vermilion River , not the Salt Fork.
Thank you for providing a wonderful service by establishing this site.
Many of us had to leave home but will not forget the memories we have of
living there.
(Thanks Pat, you would think someone in town
would see that first, I moved us and we didn't feel a thing. ED)

Suggestion
I enjoyed looking at your site. As a DHS alumni who now lives in St.
Louis, I think it would be a good idea to include a link to the DHS
Alumni site
(Thanks
will put this
link on the Educational loco info pages. Ed)

...just beginning to examine this site...so glad
that more and more info on our hometown is being created. like many
other Danvillites I left to explore other parts of the world...I have
lived in Massachusetts since 1970...most of my family still live in
danville in the old homestead out in the heights...hope others who
discover this site are as thrilled to see it. Bob Cook, class of 70

I was introduced to your website yesterday at the
Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society and really think it is one of
the best sites I have seen and used.
It is a real benefit to anyone seeking
information of any kind about Danville. I have found items that I
didn't know about before. Keep up the good work!!

.....the site is great! It's the most comprehensive "Danville" site I
have seen thus far!
I've attached a pic of the waning moments of Balloon Classic Illinois
2001. As you may already know there may not be a Balloon Classic 2002
due to insufficient funds. I think that is what gives this somewhat drab
photo meaning. The last moments of a legacy.....Thanks for your
support,
Kevin

....your page is fantastic and a real credit to
Danville and the Danville area. I didn't know you were so heavily
into the computer arena. It will take me a little longer to
explore everything....
