To my fellow citizens of Danville.  I urge you to help our mayor and his administration with more ideas to make some monetary cuts, and not personnel cuts.  The employees of Danville have endured cut after cut after cut and now must do so with  decreased wages.  However, not every agency has been forced into this situation yet.  Rumors are flying around that our police, fire, and public employees jobs are under fire once again.  Everyone knows that all of these groups have already endured cuts the past few years.  How far must we cut our workforce to cover the extreme mishandling of our money during the last administration!  As citizens of Danville, you all must take responsibility for your community.  I'm quite sure that a large chunk of this outrageous budget crisis is derived from unpaid taxes, debts, fines, water bills, garbage bills, need I go on!?  The gas tax was a good idea, however, the timing was very poor.  I freaked out myself when gas jumped 25 cents in a single day (which it seems to cycle around every two weeks). Then, when I go inside to pay for this unexplainable and rash increase I find a list of all the city alderman's names and numbers.  At the top of this list is the proposal of raising the gas tax 3 cents.  I'm pretty sure that the gas tax would have been far more cheaper than the repairs your vehicles will need banging over the best of streets in Danville.  By no means am I complaining about our public employees.  I watched them do more work to our city this year than I have in the past ten.  Taxes, taxes, taxes, we pay them all, while businesses and companies come and go for brief tax free stays.  This city seems that it's only for rent.  It seems that we have more people trying to figure out how to manage the city than those actually doing it.  Somebody must not know their job very well.  Citizens, it's time to take a stand and hold those in control accountable for their lackluster abilities.  If we don't take pride in ourselves and neighbors now, we will have no one to blame but ourselves.  So, please talk to your alderman, city council, and mayor and tell them that the answer is not to cut anymore employees.  If we continue with the increasing trend of cutting employees and paying them less, who is going to perform our all our city services?

This message will be posted on the
Forum and any replies will be posted there. Webmaster

My name is David Budka and I am railroad traction fan.  In looking at several pictures of downtown Danville I became curious about how the Illinois Terminal Railroad got around the community.  Buildings that stood out were the Breese Building, the Vermillion County Jail, and the Illinois Power Company's downtown power plant.

I think the Jail was just behind the power plant, across the street from the substation, and the power plant just a block or two from the Breese Building.       David Budka

Hi, I am looking for a craft person that deals in leather. I am trying to find a leather key case just big enough for 2 or 3 keys. I was able to find someone to make one about 10 years ago but they are no longer here. If anyone knows of someone that makes leather gifts, I would appreciate any information.

Reply:  Dee-You can call J-LO Leather in Covington, at 793-3098 I believe they have or can make what you are looking for.  They make a variety of leather items.

I just came across this Web site I think it is great. I left Tilton way back in 62 and I have a lot of fond memories. I was told there may be a Reunion of some sort for all of the gang that spent most of our nights hanging around NELS in Tilton. That was when we could play the pinball machine for a nickel. Has any one heard of this reunion? if so what dates is this set for?  Chuck

12/03/2003 21:35:29 Howdy all. Been a long time since I have ran the streets of good old Danville. I could not wait to leave. But as probably everyone of my generation used to say 'you can take the boy out of Danville but you cannot take Danville out of the boy. Graduated in 83' left same year, back in late 84' left again in 87' for the Military. I keep in contact once in awhile with a couple of people but I was wondering who else is still there and who may remember me. I was wondering about a couple of people. One whom I remember very dearly and will love till the day I die is Kari Runner, do not know her married name. I wanted to tell her I was sorry. If anyone knows her please tell her I said hello and That I still have pictures from the newspaper of her children That my mother had sent me. Also I was wondering if anyone knew what ever happened to Greg Scott???? Have not talked to him since 94'. Well I hope someone will read this and e-mail me with any info or just to chat. I stumbled upon this website, good idea. Also before I close Pam Hesser, e-mail me if you see this. Hope all are well.

I had just sent in a message. I said I could not wait to leave Danville, I forgot to say how much I miss it. Sorry if I offended anyone.
It's OK Ryan, no one is offended and remembering home makes coming home better ...so if you can't come home I will take Xmas eve and AM pics in the downtown area and post them early Xmas AM so check it out. Last night downtown was really nice,, great street lights, especially around the Temple Plaza.  Webmaster

Hello Danville,
I've been researching for a friend's birth family. I believe that his cousin may live in the Danville area. Her name is Diane, she is a special ed teacher and her husband is a consultant for the cable TV industry. I don't know her married name, but her father was Theron Belt and he died in Fithian in 1978 and is buried in Sterns Cemetery (In either Muncie or Ogden). I'm researching from California and can't find out much about Fithian except that it's a small town. Would the News Gazette be the paper I would look in for his obit? If you know the Diane I'm looking for please tell her about this message and ask her to e-mail me. Thank you  Debbie Adams azjd@sierratel.com

I have taken several digital photo's of several beautiful old stone bridges
located at the back of Harrison park. This was a picnic area and the stone bridges are still there and they are in surprisingly good condition. There trails which wound around the woods and the stone bridges were a part of the trails. The entrance was on top of Woodbury Hill and is located just East of the Amateur radio club (A-Frame clubhouse).

I would like to find some of the history of these bridges as to who
originally built them and why was the area was abandoned and let fall to
ruin. I can remember driving to the area as a teenager and taking a date
"parking" there as it was a common place for young people to frequent in the late 60's. There was also a very large wooden trestle type bridge in the same area. It was a link between the North picnic grounds and the South picnic grounds. The concrete piers are still in place as are the concrete steps and walkway leading to it. The picture of the steps in the pictures I am sending is from the South roadway, down to the stone bridges. Very interesting place with some obvious history.  Best regards, Chuck Johnson Formerly a Danville resident (Tinchertown)

PS, I'm also looking for some pictures of the old Iron Railroad trestle
which crossed the Vermilion River, close to Forrest Glen County Park . It was torn down a few years ago. This could have been the first railroad bridge South of Red Bridge.
Thanks for the Pictures we will post them over the net three days on the home page "Picture of the Day" Webmaster

I am looking for David Carter he is originally form Springfield, Illinois but he has several relatives in Danville.  He had a grandmother whom lived about 2 blocks off of Williams street who passed away just a few years ago.  I also believe that he has a sister still in Danville but she may be married so her last name is probably different.  It is very important for me to get in contact with him because we have a daughter together that he doesn't even know about.

Hi there!  A few months back I put a message on this website in hopes that someone could help me find a man by the name of "Denny", who I believe worked in law enforcement in the area back in 1979(though I'm not positive).  Well, I now know his full name and so again I am asking for any information that might help me locate him, his name is Dennis Dale Dickson or (Dixson) and he goes by "Denny". I am guessing he would be in his 50's or possibly even early 60's...  I know this isn't a lot to go on but it's all I have for now. Any help is much appreciated.

Ah, yes, good old Danville. Grew up here, can't wait to get out, we all know the story. As a teenager in Danville, it has been fun. With graduating high school in no time though, it will be time to say goodbye to Danville, and hello to a new life. Danville has been a good town to me, and I hope it can be a good town for any visitors who come. :)

I couldn't wait to get out of my former big city and move to Danville. Maybe it's not where you live externally but where you live internally that will determine your life's outcome. The 'old' Webmaster

I graduated from Danville High School in 1986 and lost contact with a good friend. His name is Richard Pate and he also graduated in 1986. We were both working at a restaurant in Danville that used to be Mike's Mayfair Inn and is now VIPS. I would really just like to talk to him and tell him what a good friend he was. I realize it has been a long time ago, but any information at all would be most appreciated.

Hi I was recently at the Sweetcorn Festival in Hoopeston, and happened to hear the announcement of a Chinese Fire drill contest! I am looking for information on how they conduct this event. I was to far away to get to it at the time .I think the Hooterville Iron Car club was in charge of this event, as they were of the other event using a car part to throw into a tire. If someone could give me information on the car club person in charge of this event I would be very grateful! thank you. I already tried the Hoopeston homepage for the events and non of the emails work .Pam

I have a strange request. When I was 7 years old my best friend Cathy Fritz was murdered by a man named Daren L. Bolton in Tucson, Arizona. Bolton has since been executed for the murder of a 2 1/2 year old girl. Bolton however lived in Danville and was accused of other crimes there in the early 80's. I was just wondering if anyone might remember anything about the crimes he committed there. (one was a rape and beating and the other was a murder of his x-wife's therapist's co-worker) If you know anything or can point me in a good direction please feel free to write me at Fxfalconfx@yahoo.com.
Thank you, Vanessa West

If anyone has into please write.  This link will take you to the arizona Sate Execution Record for Bolton http://www.adc.state.az.us/DeathRow/ExecutedGallery.htm#DAREN%20L.%20BOLTON

I have a very old floor lamp that I inherited from my Grandmother who lived in Milwaukee, Wi. I have no idea how far it dates back but expect any where between the 1930s and 1950s. It has "Danville" stamped on the bottom in uppercase. Curious if there was a lighting company in Danville and where I might find more information on this specific lamp or the company. Would make sense that she may have purchased this from the area since she lived in Wisconsin. Any help would be appreciated.

Keep up the good work.

I agree with a posting from a Frank Greene.   I am a real old-timer from Danville and I know there are a number of us still living in various places and think it would be fun to let some of these younger people know what a great town Danville was.   To mention a few:  the annual Illinois State Fair, Circuses that unloaded in Garfield Park and then marched on out to the Fair Grounds, the terrific transportation system there used to be, the Twilight Baseball Association that played at Garfield Park most every evening, etc.  Any takers?

Hi!  Love your website about Danville!  I am a Danville native, one of an old Danville family (Great-grandchild of Colonel Richard Johnson, whose home was the original Roselawn) but I have lived most of my adult life in Maryland.  I was just browsing through the site, and noticed an incorrect caption on the page of old photos around Danville--the Joseph Cannon house is labeled as the Joseph Common house.  I would like to see that corrected, because "Uncle Joe" Cannon was one of Danville's most famous sons.

Keep up the good work! Mary Johnson Angerer

Mary Thanks for the correction, first  mistake this year..Webmaster

I'm looking for a man named "Denny"...  He worked for the Danville Police Department/ Vermillion County? ( I believe), back in 1979 and apparently long after that.  Most likely in his 50's now, either an officer still or recently retired.  Any help on this would be most appreciated....  Thanks.

Keep up the good work.  Find some more high rest pix of the parks and recreational areas.

I moved from Danville to Texas in 1985. I love Texas but I will always love Danville more! Danville is home. Danville holds many good memories for me. I try to make it to Danville at least once a year to see my sister, Ruthie (Edmunds) Crose and my best friend, Doris(Warren) McClure. Every time I come to town I am surprised by another new business or a refurbishment of an existing business. I am so glad to see that Danville is thriving!  I thought it was dying back in 1985 but it is looking pretty good. This web site is the best ever!! I have enjoyed going through and looking at all of the pictures of places that I don't have time to go see when I am there for my visits. Thank you so much for creating/maintaining this great web site!!

Thank you for the kind comments

Hey Danville! I am looking for anyone who went to Cannon Grade School 55-60 or lived on Edwards, Crawford or Griffith St.
Left there at age 10 and have only been back a couple of times since. The last time was over 10 years ago.
I will be there in August of 2003, on my way to Milwaukee for the Harley 100th Anniversary party. Would like to see some of the old gang from the neighborhood if they are still around.
Here are some of the names I can remember: Rick, Dave & Bart Youmans, Dave & Joe White, Rick Miller, Linda Kerns, Al Thoman, Phil Keener, Kevin West, and Scott Wright.
If you know of anyone from this grade school or area, let me know!

Wow I do like this site I enjoy looking at the picture of the day. The old post office I remember looking at the WANTED posters and those tall tables or maybe I was short. After going there mom would take us to the library. I do miss Danville and enjoy visiting 2 or 3 times a year. I think we could have a reunion for all of us transplants on a yearly basis. Maybe an oldies festival. Let me know GOOD idea or BAD idea. We could raise money to build a new drive-in. Just a thought.

Not long ago, I wrote that my landlord lost his farm and that I needed help finding a place to live. The only thing I received was a note from the editor stating that they will have a realtor friend of theirs contact me. No body contacted me. Tonight my landlord came over and stated that he wanted a key to the house because he was bringing things over tomorrow to put into the house. EVEN though I am still here. Does this mean that nobody cares even though I tried? I really do want to do the right thing, but it seems that there is no help when you need it.  I told him that it wasn't legal the way he told me (a note slipped in the mail slot) but he said his lawyer will get a hold of me. All I want to do is get a place to live, even though it is not my fault he lost his farm, I paid my rent. CAN'T ANYONE HELP ME?

Hello: I was referred to this web site by Scott Eisenhauer whom is running for Mayor of Danville, Il. We went to school together, and I really hope he wins. I think he is a good candidate for Mayor. Yes, he is young, but so am I, and I think us Young people know more about what Danville needs and wants than some old person. Excuse the expression. Thank you. And good luck Scott. I hope you win.

(Thanks for your comment Laurie. For the rest of this campaign any endorsements for a candidates should be sent thru the Election2003 Poll's Comment-Opinion window. Assessable from the home page Webmaster)

This message is for Inquiry. I believe the School she is asking about is Collett. The dates figure in about the same time era the school was in operation. Since this mans residence was on Williams St would have placed him in the neighborhood Elementary School. However, the School was located on Kimball St, just one block away from Collett Street. I hope I was of some help.

HELP!  My father in law (William Otis Russell) was born and raised in Danville, IL.   He died last summer and I am putting together a scrapbook about his life.  I am looking for any photos, articles, birth/death notices, advertisements etc about Danville between 1925 and 1959.   I have his first school picture at CALLETT GROVE School, but I can't find any reference to a school by that name.  He grew up on Williams street.  Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Hello! my name is Jodie Nolan and I saw a request to know more about Grant school.

Some friends of mine bought it (friends of friends actually) I heard it cost them about 1$-part of a beautification grant or something in Danville. Their names are Sherman and Lisa (sorry can't remember the last) although Lisa's maiden name was Howie. I have been there since they fixed it up and it is BEAUTIFUL!!
they have a chapel on the main floor and have redone the gym into a stage (Sherman is a musician) and the 3rd floor is where the main home is. They are using the classroom there for the rooms, I've never seen a bigger kids play room!! I don't know if they still are living there I saw them last about a year ago and they were having trouble with their roof. If you get the chance to go there, they are happy to show people around and are very proud of their home

I hope this helps you !!   Jodie Nolan

I was born and raised in Danville, Illinois and this system of communication (this Website) is absolutely one of the best programs I have ever witnessed. In 1927 I was fourteen years old and watched the centennial parade on corner of Jackson and Main Street.  Does anyone remember what organization had the largest contingent of marcher's in this parade? Bob Wright, and I discussed this event many times with Bob when he was alive. Anyway, this communication system is excellent advanced thinking and whoever came up with the plan is to be commended. This is my question, as a young girl my mother and I" would go shopping downtown Danville, I would see this blind man sitting in front of the court house with a tin cup, for years I wonder who that man was. This would of been in 1960,  Any idea or information on this gentleman? I always wonder if he had a warm bed to sleep in, and food to eat, I worried for him sitting in the cold begging for money. As a young girl this Tugged at my heart.( who was he)? anyone know?  Still thinking of the court house Man.    Mrs. Kitty

Did Danville ever have a "friendly town"?  It was a small "town" in central park where the kids could drive little cars.  I understand they had to pass a test before they could participate.

Was there a movie made in the early 70's about Danville using the children in the town?  I would love to see this if it is still around and maybe get a copy!  Thanks!

Just learned of this sight tonight. Think it's great and am sure I will visit it often.  I have an inquiry to make. Back in the mid 50`s a restaurant was located on the Dixie hyw north. It was a nice place but not too large and I believe it would have been a little south of the present day Wal-Mart. Of course back then it was completely out of town.  I would like to know the name of it. It was on the right hand side when traveling north. Recently, when I was in Danville I believe I probably located the building. It houses some small business or is possibly empty. As I recall it being painted a dark brown with some orange trim. Can some one help me with the name and proper location? I was told once that a survey showed it was on a level with the old First National Bank Building downtown. Thank You.

(Mary, Check out the Picture of the Day today (Home page), is this it? Also there was an old brown restaurant Italian or ribs? It was long abandoned when we came here in '83 anyone remember ? Was it "Tony's"? Webmaster)

It was great the Miss Michigan won the Pageant in Hoopeston, however it was very low key, did anyone realize that MISS AMERICA attended the Labor Day parade and the activity's Sat, and Sun. The powers to be at the Miss America place did not want her to go, however she insisted and attended the activity's anyway. Hoopeston meant a lot to her.

My little niece got a picture with her. She was very excited.

I was wondering how we could get our church listed in your church section?

Good Question. We have a great lady (Rita Howell) that has photographed most Churches in the area. Just give us the name of your church and location, and if we have no photo, she will likely get one. If you have an electronic photo already, just email it to me along with the Church name, and your name, and we'll get it on  the Portal one Sunday soon. Webmaster

Initial Inquiry:  Dear Sirs at Danville, IL,

I am doing a research on John "Jack" Pettis, a jazz saxophonist that should have been born in Danville between 1895 and 1905. If you could provide me information where to apply for a birth certificate, or other, I'll appreciate very much your help.
I look forward to hear from you soon.

This inquiry was referred to the Illiana Genealogical and History society In IGHS in Danville Illinois. Their reply to this site (and Mr.  Borsetti)  Follows. Webmaster

Sorry it has taken me awhile to get back with you but I live in Indiana and don't get a chance to go to the courthouse at Danville very often.
On my recent trip there I found a card in the birth index file with a
child being born on Oct. 27, 1895 to Wm. & Rachel Pettis (#3/119)but  there was no name given for the child at birth.  In further checking I  did find out this child was a male and the 2nd born to this couple.  I  also found two other children born to the same parents,  those being  Elizabeth C. born June 15, 1900 & Flora born April 14, 1906.  I would  assume this is most likely the one he is looking for but cannot be sure.  I am not sure but I think I did check the 1900 census for VC and they were gone or a city directory,  I am not sure.  If you would like me to recheck the census I will do that next Friday when I work.  You  could also have him e-mail me there and ask me to check it.  If he was born in 1895 he would be listed with his family.

From a follow up email: I did forget to mention in my message to you that births were not  required by law to be recorded until 1916 in the state of IL and you might want to mention that in your response to Enrico Borsetti
regarding John "Jack" Pettis.

Hope this information helps.  You can re-write it however you wish (and) put it on the Portals Message board.

What a great site? I am a former Danville resident and seeing some of the sites brings back old memories. Reading the Morley entry also brought back some old memories. I also grew up on Lake Blvd and spent many hours at Ginny Sweet Shop and the Swing N Spring. Ice skating on Lake Vermillion, roller skating at the ILLINI, the Times Movie Theater, Dixie Drive Inn, Suttons.

I just returned from a Danville visit and I am constantly amazed how North Danville has grown. Especially my old neighborhood.

A week or so ago I saw a picture of an old merry-go-round that was
awesome!  I don't see the picture on the scenes around danville pictures.
Id like to know if it could have possibly been at the Old Liberty grade

where it is now and do you have any other pictures of the area.

Sutton's Root Beer Stand

Anyone. . .Anyone. . .If you have pictures
would you share a copy with me?

Kaysville, Utah.
Hi, I was referred to this wed site, and was wondering if anyone had a picture of the old Liberty Grade School, I went to school there around 1954-1960, or close to that time frame.

Where the Mall is now on Vermillion Street, there was the old school, a grocery store called the Liberty Market, and a small hamburger place called "The Rich House" that was across from the A&W Root Beer Stand. I use to work there when I was 14 and 15 years old, but now all these buildings have disappeared and in my minds eye I can still see them, but wish I had pictures of them so when I'm telling my children and grand children about them I could also show them.

I'm also looking for pictures of the old Sutton's Root Beer stand that was across from the school, where the Steak n Shake is now.

I grew up out in Lake Blvd, at the north end of town. Seems strange to come home and find so much going on there. When young I took swimming lessons at Mandy Temples pool at her home. I spent most of my baby sitting money at "Ginny's Sweet Shop" a garage that was turned into a small grocery store with a pool table, but the most fun in the area was the "Spring n Swing" where the Lowe's store is now.

If anyone could help in my search of old photos of any of the above mentioned places, or just want to talk about growing up in Danville, and, or especially anyone who grew up in the Lake Blvd area in the 50's and 60's, please e-mail me or send me a fax.

I love Danville. . .twenty one years of my life was spent there and it's home to me always, no matter how many more years I live away in Kaysville, Utah.

I found out that my old bedroom

I was glad to see your website, it looks like it will be very informative, since I moved to Texas in 1982, I miss Danville sometimes and it's good to be able to see what's going on up there. As a DHS alumni would like to know of any future activities for the class of 74 Good luck on Webb site.

Thanks Chuck. Take a look at the Alumni site on the Portal's 4th Local information page at  DHS Alumni Site (Ed-Webmaster)

Hello once again Danvilleland-enjoy the snow while you can/if you can. My thoughts on the river walk in Danville is no way-all we need is another place for the police to patrol cause this will certainly invite some good and bad "walkers" plus Danville has way to many other more important issues to deal with, and we certainly have plenty beautiful places to walk like Kickapoo, Kennekuk, Forest Glen, Middle Fork scenic river and others-I could go on and on but at this point I won't.

Isn't this a swell website-I've made my home page and love it..see ya all later........John Lehman

I really like the web sight. but I don't like the idea of a river walk here in Danville, because there to many other things danville needs other than a river walk.

Contact Name: Alice Greene ( I ) Have been directed to this web page by a friend in Danville. I LIKE IT, one way of getting to a large audience, I like the idea of a River Walk, send some one to San Antonio and see what they did with a dirty old river, it can be done on a smaller scale

Once again, my thanks to you (at BEAMSCO).  I have let the board members know  the new e-mail address and the web site address.  Thank you so much for a  fantastic looking web site and all the hard work by you and Joe (at FSPConnect).

It is a  web site I am very proud to refer others to as well as the allarounddanville web site.  I think it is a really great way to promote
Danville.  I hope many others get into the system.  I am e-mailing a
friend in Norway and have passed on the allarounddanville web site address  to her so she can see what our area is like.

Please correct your opening statement and relocate Danville on the North Fork of the Vermilion River , not the Salt Fork.  Thank you for providing a wonderful service by establishing this site. Many of us had to leave home but will not forget the memories we have of living there.

(Thanks Pat, you would think someone in town would see that first, I moved us and we didn't feel a thing.  ED)

I was introduced to your website yesterday at the Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society and really think it is one of the best sites I have seen and used.

It is a real benefit to anyone seeking information of any kind about Danville.  I have found items that I didn't know about before. Keep up the good work!!

.....the site is great! It's the most comprehensive "Danville" site I have seen thus far!

I've attached a pic of the waning moments of Balloon Classic Illinois 2001. As you may already know there may not be a Balloon Classic 2002 due to insufficient funds. I think that is what gives this somewhat drab photo meaning. The last moments of a legacy.....Thanks for your support,  Kevin

Since I've moved to England I must admit I've been a little homesick, but your website really helped!  It's nice to know I can visit Danville anytime I want, if only virtually.  And now my husband can finally see where I grew up!  Thanks for all your hard work, it certainly paid off.  By the way, the picture of the sunset over Lake Vermilion is absolutely lovely!

I checked the site out and it looks great.  It would definitely be a great  thing to have in most towns and cities.  Have you thought about marketing  it to the Chamber of Commerce's? The companies you have ads for should put this web address on their business cards or advertisements. Just an idea...Sheila Greenwood
10/12/01 Jim Ritenour (jim@jimthephoneguy.com) Just read about your site in the Commercial News and was looking it up.  Good luck in your new venture
